A Decade of Iconic Games

The 2010-2019 decade has been quite eventful for the Manchester United club. The decade started with them clutching the Premier League title for the twelfth time. Even though the trophy went to Manchester City in the coming year, the subsequent years saw Manchester United taking back their throne. 

The decade also saw the end of an era. The legendary Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, retired in 2013 after managing the team for nearly three decades. David Moyes replaced Sir Alex Ferguson as the new manager, and since then, Manchester United has had a rocky six seasons. 

Despite a rocky decade, the club has played some memorable games throughout the decade. Let’s look at some of the most iconic Manchester United games of the 2010-2019 decade. 

Manchester United VS. Manchester City

Event: 2011 Premier League 

After Chelsea FC’s win in the last season, all eyes were on Manchester United for the Premier League title. In the Premier League March held at Old Trafford on February 12, 2011, Manchester United managed to defeat Manchester City with 2-1. 

The iconic goal by Wayne Rooney in the last quarter of the match won them the game after Nani’s goal in the second quarter was canceled by City’s David Silva on the 65-minute mark. The game that looked like it would end in a draw ultimately went to Manchester United, kicking off a decade of superb football.

Manchester City VS. Manchester United

Event: 2012 Premier League

In the December 9 match held at Etihad Stadium, Manchester United once again managed to defeat Manchester City, this time with an aggregate of 2-3. Wayne Rooney scored two goals for Manchester United, and it seemed like the match would end in a draw. Manchester United got a free-kick in the overtime in which Robin van Persie scored the winning goal for the team. 

Manchester United VS. Arsenal

Event: 2016 Premier League 

The iconic victory of Manchester United over their long-standing rival Arsenal was possible due to Marcus Rushford’s back-to-back goals within the first 35 minutes of the game. He also assisted with the third goal by Ander Herrera, pushing Manchester United to victory. 

With this win, Manchester United became the first club to have won fifty top division home-field matches against Arsenal. The memorable victory also set the stage for Marcus Rushford’s brilliant career. 

Manchester United VS. Ajax

Event: 2017 Europa League Final

The emotional match came after the 2017 attack at the Manchester Arena. Within the first 20 minutes of the game, Paul Pogba set the stage for United’s victory over Ajax with a brilliant goal.

Even though the odds favored Ajax, the second goal by Henrikh Mkhitaryan brought victory to their opponents. After winning the Europa League Final, Manchester United became the fifth club to have won all major European league trophies. 

Paris St. German VS. Manchester United

Event: 2019 UEFA Champions League

After Manchester United let go of Jose Mourinho from the managerial spot, football legend Ole Gunnar Solskjær got hired by the club. He promised to lead Manchester United to victory and stayed true to his word. Manchester United ended up defeating Paris St. German 1-3 in an iconic, nail-biting game.
