Throughout the Premier League history we have seen incredible games between fierce rivals. Each team brings it best foot forward for the Premier League title, where some succeed while the others don’t. Defeating your opponent is one thing, but absolutely annihilating them on the field is another.
Read on as we take a look at some of the biggest wins in Premier League history.
Tottenham Hotspur VS. Wigan Athletic
Event: 2009 Premier League
More than 35,000 people in attendance at White Hart Lane had the opportunity of seeing this iconic win by the Spurs. Tottenham Hotspur crushed Wigan Athletic on the field ending the match 9-1, which remains one of the biggest wins in Premier League history to this day. All it took for the Spurs was to have Jermain Defoe on their side. The incredible footballer managed to score five goals in the second half of the game, scoring what would be the second-fastest hat-trick in the history of the League. He also became the third player to score five goals in one game, after Andy Cole and Alan Shearer. It was the biggest win for the Spurs since 1977 when they defeated the Bristol Rovers 9-0. It was also the highest score in the Premier League since 1995 when Manchester United defeated Ipswich Town 9-0.
Newcastle United VS. Sheffield United
Event: 1999 Premier League
In the memorable showdown between the two teams in the 1999 Premier League match, Newcastle United scored eight goals against Sheffield United, beating them 8-0. Alan Shearer alone scored five goals, which is one of the highest number of goals scored by a player in a single Premier League game. He shared this honor with Jermain Defoe, Andy Cole, and Dimitar Berbatov. With this iconic victory, Newcastle United moved into the mid-table and avoided demotion. Sheffield United, however, was not as lucky, since the team dropped to the second tier by the end of the season.
Manchester United VS. Ipswich Town FC
Event: 1995 Premier League
Arguably one of the best Premier League matches in history, the game saw Manchester United winning 9-0 against Ipswich Town FC, in what is still the highest margin of any win in the Premier League. Andrew Cole proved himself a valuable asset for Manchester United and scored three consecutive goals in the first hour of the match. He ended up scoring two more goals by the end of the match, including the goal that cemented the victory of Manchester United. No team has been humiliated in a football match quite like Ipswich Town, and we have yet to see a Premier League match this memorable.
Chelsea VS. Wigan Athletic
Event: 2010 Premier League
In a second humiliating defeat for Wigan Athletic, Chelsea FC scored eight goals, beating Wigan 8-0. Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka scored three and two goals for Chelsea, respectively, paving way for Ashley Cole to deliver the game winning goal on the 90-minute mark. The Stamford Bridge match is still a memorable lesson in defeating your opponents, and if there’s one thing we’ve learned from their record, it is that Chelsea is a great teacher for this lesson.
