Manchester United starlet could be tried in new position to help cover injury

Manchester United attacking midfielder Angel Gomes could be used as an emergency left-back as Luke Shaw faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a number of options to cover Shaw as he looks set to be out of action for five weeks with a hamstring injury, with Gomes considered among those possibilities, according to the Guardian.

The 18-year-old has mainly played in attacking midfield in his career so far, but it has been known for players to switch roles once they make the step up from youth level to the first-team.

While trying an experienced player in an important position looks a risk, it maybe that Solskjaer has spotted something in Gomes in training that’s persuaded him he could do a job there if needed.

Of course, it remains to be seen if Gomes gets the nod over the likes of Ashley Young, Marcos Rojo, Matteo Darmian or Diogo Dalot in that position.

Man Utd have options to help cover for Shaw while he’s out, but it would certainly be intriguing to see if this presents an opportunity for Gomes to impress and hold down a regular place in the team.
