Solskjaer early clash with Manchester United star shows Mourinho may have had a point

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reported to have had a bit of a run-in with Anthony Martial already, less than two weeks into the Manchester United job.

The Norwegian tactician is said to have had to reprimand Martial for returning back late after Christmas.

And according to the Daily Mail, this is far from the first instance of the France international failing to impress staff at the club with his discipline.

The report makes reference to Martial getting on the wrong side of Jose Mourinho in the summer – something which, at the time, may have been written off as the Portuguese being overly grumpy about things as usual.

However, while Mourinho clearly clashes with many players in his unsuccessful time at Old Trafford, that doesn’t mean some of his grievances won’t have been justified.

Martial, clearly a talented player, does seem to need reminding of his responsibilities all too often, and one hopes he can fix this soon or it is bound to cost him the kind of career he’s capable of.

The 23-year-old is running out of time to show he’s truly committed to the cause, and is really at the age now where he needs to step up and perform week in, week out, which means living the life of a professional footballer.

In truth, Martial could do well to take a leaf out of Cristiano Ronaldo’s book, with the former Red Devils star having a similarly inconsistent start to life at the club as a youngster before putting in the extra hours to take his game to a new level at about this age.

Martial has similar potential and would do well to take Solskjaer’s warning on board, but it may well be that we’ll look back and see Mourinho had a point about the player after all.
